Unexpected Turbulence Is A Major Cause Of Personal Injury On

With over 10 million trips annually, flying is still considered to be one of the safest forms of transportation. In fact, you are far safer flying in a plane than driving in a car on any of our California freeways, explains an attorney in the state. However, while flying is reliably safe, the Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, reports that the leading causes of in-flight personal injuries are turbulence and unexpected decompression, occurrences that unfortunately appear to be on the rise.

Recently, a United Airlines flight en route from London to Los Angeles was diverted to Montreal due to the serious injuries sustained by ten people during extreme turbulence over the Atlantic Ocean. The passengers who were not physically injured were visibly shaken.

According to reports from KABC news, there were approximately 200 passengers onboard the Boeing 777 when it suddenly experienced severe turbulence. One of the main reasons so many passengers suffered serious injury was that the seat belt sign was inactive. One of the flight attendants sustained a broken leg, and several of the injured passengers had head trauma due to the fact that their heads hit the ceiling.

In the United States, about 58-60 people are injured annually by not wearing their seatbelts while flying. Since 1980, US air carriers have been involved in 234 turbuable-type accidents, resulting in 298 serious injuries and 3 fatalities.

Additionally, approximately 40-50 rapid aircraft decompression accidents occur each year. Last week, hundreds of people heard a loud pop before a huge explosion ripped a five-foot-by-one-foot hole on the top of the fuselage. Passengers feared for their lives on the short flight from Phoenix, Arizona to Sacramento, California. They had just seconds to find and put on their oxygen masks. The pilots had to nosedive the airplane to reach a safe altitude. Luckily, only two people suffered personal injury on this flight, according to a local attorney. Although more cracks have been found on Southwest's B 737, this airline does not have a good safety record.

Since the Federal Aviation Act governs airlines, they are held to a high standard of care for their passengers. The airline and its employees are required to do all that is reasonable to prevent injuries from occurring. Specifically, this is why the pilot usually discourages cabin movement during flights by illuminating the "fasten your safety belt" sign. While turbulence and sudden decompression are often unexpected, you can help ensure your safety by always wearing your seatbelt during the flight.

Linha Do Douro: The Best Railway Journey in Portugal

Road trips can be fun and are a good way to quickly see a large portion of a country. But if you are considering a holiday to Portugal then you should definitely consider leaving the car behind. Portugal has one of the best train journey’s in Europe – a leisurely and meandering route that runs from Porto to Pocinho along 120km of riverside track. If you have taken advantage of cheap flight options to Porto and want to see some of the country then this train ride up towards the Spanish border along the Douro river is definitely one to consider.

This is a fascinating historic railway route, which once crossed the border into Spain from where it was possible to get a through service to Salamanca or Madrid in the heyday of railway travel. Now many branch lines have been closed but this is still an amazing route with more than 20 tunnels, 30 bridges and 34 stations. Trains run from Porto three times a day. It is possible to do the return trip, which costs around 13 Euros each way, in a day, though to get the most out of the journey, why not take your time and stop off at some of the fascinating stops along the way?

A ride on the Linha do Douro is perfect for combining with a hiking holiday. You could start off with a day or two rambling around historic Porto before hopping on the train. There are many useful stations that give access to some areas that are perfect for a walking holiday, enjoying the great outdoors. To get onto the best section of the line, along the Douro gorge, you change trains at Régua when you have come from Porto. Some stations are simply shelters on platforms that are used by local wine producers (this is Port wine territory), though you may be interested in disembarking at one of them none the less. You could hike in the gorgeous vineyards along the Douro river, well off the well-beaten tourist track.

Interesting stops on the route include the pretty port producing town on Pinhao, which is a good base if you feel like taking a river tour or hiking through surrounding vineyards and hills. Be sure to hike from Pinhao up to the miradouro at the small village of Casal de Loivos – the views from here are amongst the very best along the Douro. You can also hike to Sabrosa to see the home of Magellan.

Tua, another station, is a stop for river cruise boats and has good food. Then Pocinho, a pleasant port-producing town with plenty of amenities. If you want to truly experience what this region is all about though, you should be sure to spend at least some of your stay in a traditional quinta – wine-producing estates often diversify into tourist accommodation and some of them can be rustic and delightful.

Come to the Douro river and explore the possibilities on foot and by rail.

Budget Airlines in South Africa

The advent of cheap airline tickets has opened up a whole new philosophy and way of travel. Suddenly at the turn of the century it became possible to fly short distances whilst paying prices comparable to taking a bus or train to a destination. The increase in budget airlines increased the competition between air travel companies and resulted in a continuation of the driving down of prices. This was especially the case in Europe, where business dictated that many individuals would need to travel regularly between countries within the continent. Holiday makers too, were soon encouraged by less expensive flight tickets and popular routes for holiday makers resulted in healthy profits for numerous airlines whose ‘no frills’ policy surprised many industry experts to a certain extent with their success levels.

By no means was this flying revolution limited to European countries. A similar model has proved very successful in North America. Again, travellers have been presented with a choice of airlines that do not charge high rates for their tickets. In exchange, flyers are offered great value for money for their holiday, as well as a flight that does not include any extras. Therefore, passengers will not be able to enjoy complementary beverages and food. However, this has proved a sacrifice that huge amounts of travellers every year are willing to sacrifice. After all, there is nothing stopping people buying food in the airport and eating that once in flight. This proves much more economical than flying with a traditional airline that offers food with the flight ticket but at a far more expensive rate.

The spread of budget airlines continues and they are, for example, extremely popular in China where people have to travel huge distances to get to different provinces. Often flying saves hours or even days in travel time. The advent of affordable flight tickets has been a very welcome development and is allowing more and more the freedom to travel quickly and effectively without incurring dramatic costs.

Emerging markets such as countries in Africa have also got in on the act. Cheap air travel is possible in and around Eastern Africa for example with a number of companies beginning services that aim to cut the cost of flying in Africa. However it is perhaps unsurprising that the regional economic powerhouse, South Africa, is the country that leads the way when it comes to budget airlines that have top reputations. A number of airlines are vying for the public’s affections and regular flights are available linking South African cities to each other as well as to other cities in the wider Southern African region. Therefore it is now very easy to buy cheap flights in South Africa whether you are in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein or Pretoria.

How To Overcome Your Fear of Flying

The first thing to understand is that fear or anxiety is always of a future event. In other words, it’s a part of your imagination so is not “real.” But it sure feels real and affects you as real with your heart pounding and your adrenalin pumping. So you treat the fear of flying by treating the imagination.

You have a vivid imagination and can easily picture crashing into a mountain, an engine exploding, a terrorist takeover, a wing falling off, a fire in the cabin, a strike by a shower of asteroids; the pilot might be drunk or have a heart attack, etc. Any number of things can go wrong!

Then your rational mind steps in to remind you that the odds of such things happening are much higher than hitting the zillion-dollar lottery. And you’ve heard many times how flying is safer than driving a car. Then your imagination returns: Well, people do hit the lottery and accidents do happen, and people do get struck by lighting – and I am 30,000 feet in the air without a parachute!

Einstein said that the imagination is the most powerful thing in the universe. You have the free-will choice of using it for good or ill, negative or positive. If you want to use yours on negative things, then you could become a horror novelist like Stephen King and make lots of money. Or if you want to, you can use it on positive things like – not only relaxing and enjoying every plane ride, but to look forward to it with the gleeful anticipation of a child going to Disneyland. It’s all in your mind and all controllable. So how do you control it?

You control it the way a stage performer controls her performance, or the way a military maneuver is controlled – you plan it, practice it, train for it. You rehearse it again and again till it’s memorized by the muscles and you can do it without the intervention of thought. This is a definition of mindfulness – action without the interference of thought. So, you don’t really have a fear-of-flying problem; you have a fear-of-the-unknown problem. Correctly rehearsing your trip makes it fully known.

Correct rehearsal requires being deeply relaxed. Deep physical and mental relaxation allows your visualization to be more effectively internalized and assimilated into your subconscious mind so you can then operate on auto-pilot – no pun intended. Otherwise your training won’t stick, but will just go in one ear and out the other.

Here is a basic self-hypnosis method: Sitting in a comfortable straight-back chair or lying in bed, take three very deep breaths. Now scan your body from head to toes to relieve all tension. Simply focus on each muscle group in turn, and tell it to be heavy and relaxed. Tell your face muscles, eye lids and jaw to be heavy and relaxed. Tell your neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands, fingers, chest, abdomen, hips, buttocks, legs and feet to be heavy and relaxed.

Now relax the mind by very closely following your breathing as it goes in and out. When distracting thoughts intrude, gently return attention to your breathing again and again – until your mind is fairly quiet and still.

Now imagine watching yourself on a large movie screen on the day of your flight. See yourself at home getting ready to go to the airport – as relaxed then as you are now. Detachedly observe yourself packing a carry-on bag and a check-in bag. See yourself taking the two bags to the car and placing them neatly in the trunk. You get in the car and start driving to the airport noticing how relaxed and calm you feel. You are satisfied that all the details of the trip have been taken care of up to this point.

Now you pull up to the departure gate of your airline, get out of your car and open the trunk. An attendant takes your bags and you proceed to the parking area and find a fairly convenient space. You calmly walk back to the terminal and wait in the short line at the ticket counter. You notice how perfectly relaxed and patient you are. The smiling agent hands you your tickets and you head for the boarding gate. You see and stop at a newsstand and peruse the rack of novels. A civil war romance jumps out at you and you buy it for the flight.

Your mind is perfectly calm and clear as you enter and complete the security check. You hand your ticket to the attendant, who stamps it and gives you your seat number. You sit in the waiting area and thumb through the book. Your flight is called and you stand in line with the other passengers – still feeling deeply relaxed and without a thought in your mind except how enjoyable this novel and this flight is going to be. You observe yourself enter the plane and make your way to your seat feeling perfectly calm and relaxed. You sit, fasten your seat belt and get back into the novel – hardly noticing the smooth, powerful takeoff.

The heroine is risking her life hiding and caring for a wounded enemy soldier in the family’s wine cellar. You close your eyes for a moment to wonder if you would have the courage to do such a risky thing. When a bit of turbulence distracts you, you simply take a deep breath and return attention to your reading. You stop reading again to taste a nice chicken Parmesan meal with a glass of Chianti.

You see yourself rooted in the present moment now feeling more peaceful and relaxed than you’ve ever known yourself to be. You look out the window to notice how wonderfully beautiful the view from this height. Before you realize it the plane has landed in Paris and is taxiing up to the ramp – and you’re feeling almost sorry the flight is ending so soon.

The flight is over and you can gently return attention to normal. If you want, you can replay your trip again and again until you’re perfectly clear how everything will transpire. You’re learning to live in reality instead of mentality – living in the security of the present rather than the anxiety of the future.

Bon voyage!

You can register for free at each website to try some searches and take a look at some of the features.

ThaiLoveLinks.com is probably the best Thai dating site on the web.

I set up a free account and found more than enough single people from Thailand in major cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, and many other cities. You can also find Thai singles in some of the other Asian countries.

Thai Love Links has all the important qualities that you need in a good dating site.

Use the search tools to look through the personals according to region, age, height and weight, type of occupation, level of education, and a whole bunch of other little details.

AsianDating.com is one of the more popular dating sites for Asian singles. There are thousands of singles from all over Asia, and you can find a bunch of single people from Thailand.

Since AsianDating.com is not a Thai dating site, you will have to use the advanced search menu to find singles from Thailand.

ThaiLoveLines.com sounds similar to the first site that I listed, but it was created by a separate company.

By searching I was able to find thousands of personals ads in the database. What I don’t like is that the free basic membership doesn’t allow you to do advanced searches or use most of the features. You have to be a paying member to access the majority of the options and features.

LoveMe.com is the web address for A Foreign Affair (AFA). AFA is an international service that connects men and women from different parts of the world.

The majority of users are looking for a husband or wife. The site features women from Asia but also Russia and Latin America.

Those four sites are not the only ones to find Thai singles online, but they’re definitely some good ones to take a look at.

How to Book a Vacation Rental Home

While there is a growing abundance of options when it comes to booking a vacation home, many travelers still find the rental market to be a little chaotic – at least in comparison to more traditional accommodations like hotels/motels. The increasing popularity of vacation rentals as a value-packed alternative to pricier hotels has led to an abundance of options that can be overwhelming.

Here are some tips for booking your vacation rental to ensure that you are getting the most bang for your buck, while protecting yourself from scams or disappointment.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #1: Check out niche listers that focus on specific destinations.

Whether you’ve rented a vacation villa before or not, you’ll want to work with a local company and representatives who know their stuff.

If you’re interested in a Santa Barbara beach house rental, a qualified representative will earn their stripes by walking you through the suitable available properties based on your unique needs and desires. For instance, if you’re bringing your three Bernese mountain dogs, they’ll recommend Santa Barbara beach rental locations that are both dog-friendly and bric-a-brac-free.

Additionally, once you arrive, you’ll want to enjoy concierge services to help you get reservations at that trendy new restaurant, or simply recommend a hike that overlooks the ocean. An anonymous operator three states away won’t be able to deliver that level of local service.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #2: Use a credit card to protect yourself and minimize risks.

You want and expect every detail of your vacation to be perfect. But unfortunately that won’t always be the case. So you need to protect yourself.

Renting with your credit card through a Santa Barbara vacation rental management company offers you that protection. If for some reason the property doesn’t meet your expectations, and the management won’t do anything to fix it, you can keep a record of the problem and dispute the charge with your credit card company.

Property owners who rent person-to-person usually insist on a cashier’s check for 50 percent of the vacation rental to reserve it, and then the other 50 percent in cash upon your arrival. If you later discover roaches scuttling through the kitchen of your vacation home, or other elements of the property that were grossly misrepresented, you will have no leverage because you will have already paid in full in cash.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #3: Get the most bang for your buck.

Dollar for dollar, a vacation rental gives you so much more than a luxury hotel. You get exponentially more space (both indoors and outdoors). You get a host of amenities from private pools to high end kitchens to top flight entertainment systems, all for your exclusive use. Unlike an anonymous hotel room off a crowded corridor, you have a serene home away from home to call your own.

But there are a host of priceless intangible benefits you get when you book your vacation rental through a professional management company. Working with a premier management company to find your ideal vacation home gives you a whole new level of service. A professional company has skin in the game. They are working to establish a good reputation and a list of return clientele, rather than just trying to make fast money.

In the-best-surprise-is-no-surprise category, unlike an absentee owner off Craigslist, a professional Santa Barbara rental company has someone who is troubleshooting issues 24/7, working hard to keep both the renters and the owners happy.

The most underused amenity is the professional staff. Once you arrive at your rental villa in Santa Barbara, they are at your beck and call. Concierge and housekeeping services are a mere button-touch away. The staff’s local Santa Barbara knowledge and connections can turn an average vacation into something amazing. There is no extra cost, and the return is priceless.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #4: Book with confidence.

There’s a HUGE difference between someone who just wants to sell you a room, and a professional vacation rental company that wants to make sure that you enjoy your ultimate Santa Barbara vacation so much that you return again and again. The key to that difference is delivering on what is promised.

Many vacation rental agencies are just big clearing-houses that list properties, sometimes all over the world. They do not usually specialize in a region and offer no other services, aside from rental matchmaking. They can’t make guarantees about the Santa Barbara beach house rental you’ve booked because their representatives have never visited them, inspected them for health and safety concerns, or even met the owners. They cannot vouch for the actual condition of the vacation rental property, the advantages/disadvantages of the location, etc.

Some agencies just want to book the beach rental and collect their fee. They may not care too much about what happens during your stay.

If you’ve never visited the Santa Barbara beach rental house you’re considering, or gotten a firsthand report from a trusted friend, you have no idea whether the photos you’ve seen on the web site are an accurate representation. They might be outdated, retouched or from an entirely different place. (It goes without saying that you should never rent a vacation rental that doesn’t offer photos!) Beware of any site that only offers view or exterior shots. If they’re not willing to show you what the vacation house rental looks like inside, you don’t want to stay there.

With a professional vacation rental company, you can be assured that the quality you see is the quality you will get.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #5: Go with the highest standards of quality.

Professional vacation rental agencies are held to higher standards than private owners. Even if an owner fervently believes that their Santa Barbara vacation rental is clean and up-to-date, their standards might not match your own. One person’s no-visible-dust-bunnies and hi-fi-system are another person’s filthy and anachronistic. A professionally managed Santa Barbara vacation house rental will also be a professionally cleaned and maintained vacation house rental.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #6: Understand the risks of booking through free listing sites like Craigslist.

Listing on a free site is, well, free. No crime in that (who doesn’t love free?), but that might point toward a general laissez-faire attitude the owner has toward his property and tenants.

The owners who are willing to pay a fee to keep their vacation houses booked and in first-class condition have already demonstrated their care and commitment to a working relationship that is beneficial to all parties. The management companies they work with are companies you can rent from worry-free.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #7: Don’t be afraid to negotiate.

The more often these vacation rentals are occupied, the happier the owners are, so if you are planning a last-minute or a long-term stay or if you are a frequent visitor, there is often room to negotiate on the price of your vacation rental. Sometimes the discount might be as much as 30 percent.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #8: Do your research and compare rates, amenities, and conditions before entering into a rental agreement.

When you’re trying to narrow down your choice of a Santa Barbara vacation rental, be sure you’re comparing apples to apples. A smaller house on the beach will likely cost more than a larger one in the hills. Know what you’re getting from each property, and from each management company. Follow your gut and go with the company that will cheerfully show up in the middle of the night to snake the sink.

Another benefit to working with a Santa Barbara vacation rental professional management company is that it’s so easy to do a background check on them. Call or visit the Better Business Bureau or a vacation rental site like FlipKey.com. Has the firm had any reasonable complaints lodged against them? How were they resolved? Type the name of the Santa Barbara vacation rental firm and its owner into Google and you’ll get a wealth of informative opinions.

The increasing popularity of Santa Barbara vacation rentals has led to an abundance of online resources. Your best bet is to do due diligence and compare rates, amenities, reputations, views, and conditions before entering into a rental agreement. It’s your vacation and booking the right accommodations will help you ensure that your holiday will meet and exceed your expectations.
